Safety tips for traveling with your furry friend

I frequently take my dogs places with me- so much so that whenever I open the door to leave they are by my side, ready to go in the car. In fact, they know that when I say “in” that means to get in the car. Not long after we got Hershey, I heard about a local car accident where one of the drivers had a dog in their car that wasn’t buckled in so when paramedics arrived & opened the door the dog bolted from the car.* This scared me so bad; I kept thinking ‘How would Hershey react?’ and realistically, most dogs run when they’re scared.

Let’s go over some statistics from PetPro Supply Co first:

  • 43.3 Million households in the United States have at least one pet.
  • 84% of dog owners who take their dog in the car don’t have their dog properly restrained; only 16% properly restrain their dog.
  • 60% of dog owners have been distracted while driving due to their pets
  • If a car crashes at 25mph their unrestrained dog can be projected forward at a force that is equal to 40 times their body weight. So, a dog that is 75lbs can reach impact at a force of 3,000 pounds… this could be fatal.
So what can you do to keep your furry pal safe?

Passenger seat, yay or nay?

A lot of websites recommend against traveling with your pup in the passenger seat due to the risk of injury resulting from an airbag but if you DO travel with your pup in the passenger seat make sure they’re properly restrained.

Why & how should my dog be restrained?

If your dog is in the front or back seat they should be restrained; this will keep them from wandering, jumping out of windows, jumping out of the car when the door is opened, and will reduce the risk of the driver being distracted. It will also keep your pooch safer if an accident should happen. There are a variety of restraint types by weight/car that can be found on websites like Chewy. The AKC website recommends crash-tested safety harness seat belts that clip right into your car’s buckle. These will keep your pup’s neck safe & prevent them from flying off the seat in the event of an accident.
If you prefer to not have your pup on your seats then another option is to get a crate. There are dog crates made specifically for cars; they are crash-tested and are usually made from a durable material like aluminum and have some padding for impact protection. A crate for the car needs to have enough room for the dog to be able to move around & lay comfortably. It also needs to have good ventilation.

What else can I do?

Scared dogs often run away from whatever is scaring them; so dogs often flee car accidents if they are not restrained properly & if paramedics/help don’t know there is a dog in the car. So what can you do to keep your dog safe in the event of an accident?
– Get your dog an ID tag with their name & your info. You can find some here and here

– Keep an ID card in your car. This one has a detailed card to keep in your glovebox, wallet, or center console & a smaller one to keep with/near the dog.

– You know those “Baby on Board!” stickers parents have on their cars? Get one for your dog! These are made with durable magnets/material to withstand changing weather conditions & stay on the car.

– Don’t open the windows too far & lock the windows so your pooch can’t jump out or open them further (Milton has done this).

– Train your dog early on to be comfortable in the car.

Happy and Safe Travels with your Furry Friend!

What We’re Doing About Etsy’s Changes

Some of you may have noticed that prices on our Etsy store have increased; this is because Etsy has increased the amounts that they charge us. In order to continue bringing our customers quality items we’ve had to raise prices. In addition to raising prices we’ve also had to limit certain product offerings through Etsy.
I did not want to do this & to be honest, I’m not happy about it. Some of you have been such loyal return customers for years now & you’ve come to depend on our consistent pricing so it was really hard to raise prices. We want to be able to offer you the best quality & variety of products at affordable prices.

So, what are you doing about it?

Well, we’ve looked into a few options and this is what I’ve come up with- we are going to offer 3 alternative ways to place your orders with us. By doing this we will be able to offer our regular prices, processing times, and free shipping services to our U.S. customers.

How can I place an order now?

Well, you can still place an order in our store on Etsy if you’d like. We still love using our Etsy storefront & are happy to be a part of the Etsy community so as of now we plan to never get rid of this option.

You can also follow us on Facebook, on Instagram, and on this website. We will post a larger variety of product offerings on these sites. Products offered will still continue to have our free shipping in the US guarantee & will be at our original price-points.
Additionally, these options allow us to broaden our custom orders & allow us to offer porch pickups when available.

How do I order through Facebook, Cherishedcottage.com, or Instagram?

On Facebook or Instagram you can either comment to let us know you’re interested in an item or you can message us about the item/to request a custom order. We’ll set it all up for you & send you an invoice to pay for your order.
On Cherishedcottage.com we are working on setting up a storefront. We will also be posting shoppable blog posts where you can checkout on our site directly.
I also want to add that if you follow us on Etsy & like an item there you can always email us to find out that non-Etsy pricing & receive an order invoice that way. Our email is: cherishedcottage98@gmail.com.

What about Lazy Dog Vintage?

Nothing is changing with Lazy Dog Vintage; we still have our booth space & still absolutely love our Lazy Dog family! We will still be continuing to stock our booth and continue to offer the same pricing there. If you see something in our booth at Lazy Dog please know you can talk to Ashley or Justin about placing a custom order through them & all items in the store can be purchased directly in the store.

Will you still offer sales & honor coupon codes?

Yes! We will always honor our return customer coupon code & we will continue posting sales & offering coupon codes.
*Please note: these sales/codes are only valid when purchasing from us directly. If you’ve come to use from Lazy Dog they offer their own awesome sales throughout the year that we participate in & you’ll definitely want to check out.

The Breakdown

We are still on Etsy & don’t plan on leaving Etsy.
We are now offering you the option to order from us directly through our blog, our Facebook page, and our Instagram page.
We are still going to do sales & coupon codes on our own sites.
We are still selling at Lazy Dog Vintage.
Overall nothing is going away, we’re just giving you more ways to order from us.

2020 Fall Fun List

Can you believe it’s fall already!? This year (for me at least) sometimes feels like it’s dragging on but then when I sit back & think of the year as a whole I can’t believe we’re already in the fall!!
I realize that this year has been tough for a lot of us & we’ve missed out on a lot of our usual spring/summer activities that we really enjoy. So I tried to come up with a list of fun fall activities that can mostly be done at home & if not can hopefully be done with whatever social distancing/health requirements are in your area.
I hope you enjoy this list & feel free to share what you do you with us either in the comments or on social media!

August Announcement

Hi Everyone,

With August here and social distancing still ongoing I started thinking of picnics and stay-cations during this season of life that we are in! My hope is to share with you some recipes and craft ideas for the kids. So, as the month progresses Alissa & myself will be sharing a variety of posts & ideas with you; we will see how this goes!

I come from a very large family. Lots of aunts, uncles, cousins! Our family did not have a lot of money but, my dad always made sure we were surrounded by love, family and food! Some of my favorite memories are summer picnics with my big family! Everyone would gather at my parent’s house. Dad would start early in the morning; he’d husk and clean the roughly 5-6 dozen ears of corn he purchased from a local farm, or he would soak and clean the clams purchased for those who liked them or he would make his special hand made burgers. Not to mention all the side dishes prepared from vegetables from my dad’s garden. We did not have much money but, that did not seem to matter to any of us. We had family and memories and that’s what mattered most!

If you have try any of these recipes & ideas and you enjoyed them or have any questions please leave us a comment below; we love to hear from you!

Do you have childhood memories of picnics with your family? If so, please feel free to share them with us.

Quick & Easy Broccoli Cheddar Soup

Broccoli cheddar soup is my absolute favorite soup option so when I put together this recipe I was looking for something that would be easy to make but also definitely satisfy my love of broccoli cheddar. This soup is thick, creamy, and full of delicious cheese & broccoli flavors.

Ingredients:

  • 1 whole stick butter (1/2 cup)
  • 1 Tbs onion powder
  • 1/3 cup flour
  • 4 cups whole milk
  • 2 cups half-and-half
  • 4 heads broccoli- cut into florets (you can also use frozen broccoli if that is easier)
  • 4 cups grated sharp cheddar cheese (you can also use mild cheddar, cheddar jack, etc)
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp ground black pepper
  • 1/2 – 1 cup chicken broth (veggie works okay too)
  • Nutmeg (optional)

Directions:

  1. Melt butter in large pot over medium heat; add onion powder. Mix well & allow to become a golden brown.
  2. Add flour to butter/onion mixture. Stir well & allow to thicken (no more than 1 minute).
  3. Pour in milk & half-and-half, a pinch of nutmeg (if desired), salt, and pepper. Stir to combine & add broccoli in.
  4. Cover pot, reduce heat to low & allow to simmer for 30 minutes.
  5. Stir in 3-4 cups of cheese until melted.
  6. Add in chicken broth starting with 1/2 a cup at first until you get the soup thickness you desire.
  7. Using a blender, immersion blender, or potato masher break up the broccoli into smaller bite sized pieces or until puree’d (smooth & creamy).
  8. ENJOY!
