25 Mother’s Day Gift Idea’s

So I don’t know about you guys but May has been super busy for me ( I know, it’s only been a few days); my planner looks like a small child just scribbled all over the last few days! With how hectic the month of May can be for many of us- graduations, kids coming home from college, finals, preparing for summer etc –  I want to make sure that we don’t forget about Mother’s Day. No matter how busy we are we need to take some time to celebrate our Mother’s and show them how grateful we are for all that they’ve done for us.

I’ve compiled a list of handmade, ready-to-ship, Mother’s Day gifts from Etsy that I personally feel would be amazing gifts for moms and are things that I would give my own mother.
Each of these items is handmade with love and care which I think makes the gift extra special!

So, check out the items I’ve listed below – the link to the items listing can be found directly beneath the picture of the item. Show these wonderful crafters some love!

** It’s important to note that when you’re ordering an item not all of these items ship from your own country and may take longer to arrive.

Laundry Guide

Some of you may know that a member of our team (and my big sister) has Down syndrome and while she has higher functioning Down syndrome there still are things that she may struggle with on an everyday basis compared to others. I work with Murry to help her learn how to do the simpler things that a “typical” 30 year old woman does.

One of the topics we have been focusing on recently is chores around the house. I have discovered that like many other people with developmental disabilities it is hard for Murry to recall how to do a task if there’s been a significant amount of time since she last did the task. One of the areas where we particularly have struggled with this has been doing laundry; she usually does her laundry one day a week and by the next week would have to be retaught portions of the task because she’d forget.

Because I know this is something that affects many people who have developmental disabilities or delays and because I believe that everyone deserves to feel as normal as they possibly can, I have been coming up with some guides to help Murry and people like her tackle everyday tasks a little easier.

So now it’s time to introduce my very first guide!

I firstly want to explain the guide. As I said above I initially made this as a helping hand for my sister so that she can do her laundry on her own without her having to ask for help each time or needing reminders. But I have also discovered that parents who are teaching their young children how to do chores and do laundry have found this guide equally beneficial.

The majority of people find it easier to learn, relate things, and understand when different colors and fonts are involved so I have organized the guide by varying fonts and colors. So as you can see from the photos that the word whites is written in a white font, colors in multi-color font, and so forth. The last page of the guide includes a few stickers/labels that can be used to identify what goes where. So we have a label for soap, softener, dryer sheets, and smaller color-coded labels that reflect the water temperature settings.

laundry guide, laundry how to guide, laundry chart, laundry how to chart, downloadable laundry guide, downloadable laundry chart, laundry guideMurry has gotten great use out of this guide and I hope that you do too. If you would like use to use different colors or to put someone’s name on it (Murry’s Laundry Chart for example) I would be more than happy to do so and without any extra cost. To purchase the guide and to look at it a little more closely follow this link.

This is a downloadable PDF file so when you purchase and download it you won’t necessarily have stickers but if you go to any local dollar store or convenient store you can by a small pack of printable labels that should easily do the trick when you print them. You can also simply tape the labels onto their respective items.

Let us know what you think of the guide in the comments below and if you have any questions about it feel free to leave it in the comments or to contact us on Etsy!

Fall is here!

As we all know, Fall is approaching. Where we live the weather certainly hasn’t cooled much (in fact, we have been going through a bit of a heat wave in the last week) but some leaves are still changing and beginning to fall.Fall, leaves, fall leaves, pumpkin

There’s also the more obvious reminder- pumpkin. There’s pumpkin everywhere right now and it will stay this way for the rest of the season which is fine with me because I like pumpkin. But the month of September doesn’t just bring the changing of the leaves, pumpkins, and cozy clothes; it also brings fall decorations!

I personally am a huge fan of summer but by the time September comes around I’m ready for a little cooler weather and some comfy clothes. I also really enjoy decorating for fall so to bring in the season I have added two new handmade items to our shop. I’ve spent a lot of time recently trying to find the best way to make wreaths that will survive various weather conditions and that will also look beautiful. The result of my research and hours spent in craft stores is these two wreaths (pictured below). There will be many more to come as the seasons continue but this is what we’ve started with. Let us know what you think and if you have any special requests!

This wreath was made by special request and the customer loved it so much that I decided to add it to our website!

This second wreath was actually the very first one I made but it’s started a lot of interest in my making other wreaths.

Spring Time Gardening Tips

Spring is one of my favorite times of the year! It is when the earth starts awakening, the flowers start pushing through the warm earth and the trees start to bud. The days are growing longer and most days the sun is shining. It is also the time to plan for a garden.

This is the time when I start to feel alive again and my mood is elevated. I don’t  know about you but, I am just so happy during spring and summer!  It is the time I also become more creative. I love to plan parties and picnics. Over the next two months I will be planning for a graduation party and a picnic. I will have recipes for cool pasta salads, potatoes salads, desserts and more. Continue to follow our blog for those tips and ideas.

There is something almost healing about planting a garden and playing in the warm soil. Not to mention having food that comes from your own backyard. Free of e coli, salmonella and chemicals. My husband and I have already started our garden. We have planted bib lettuce, potatoes, and broccoli. We live in what the garden catalogs classify as “zone 6”. Down further in this post I will list the types of vegetables that can be planted for “zone 6” and the date range for each.

Flowers, whether they are bulbs, roses or annuals also need special care at this time of year. Clean away any dead leaves or other debris left around your plants from the winter. Work the soil and give them a light feeding of your favorite plant food or fertilizer.

Here are some tips for taking care of those beautiful bulbs: Fertilize summer bulbs monthly early in the growing season. Apply 2½ tbsp. of 10-10-10 fertilizer per every 10 square feet each month from the time stems appear until the plants begin flowering. If your flowers have already bloomed then try this next tip…..Fertilize spring bulbs immediately after flowering with a balanced, 10-10-10 analysis fertilizer. Apply 5 tbsp. per 10 square feet of flower bed.

Roses are my most favorite of all flowers! The variety of colors and scents are just amazing! My husband will cut several bouquets on a weekly basis through the summer. I love having arrangements throughout our home. Roses need at least 6 hours of sunlight per day. They cannot be planted too close together. Spray the roses lightly with a fungicide during periods of cool weather.

In a later post we will check on those beautiful vegetables and how they are growing…

Now the vegetable planting guide I promised: Spring Planting Guide

Handmade Christmas Ornaments in a Time of Need

Since November just began we have tried to get some Christmas things up on our shop. I know, I know, it isn’t December yet! But we wanted to get them up sooner rather than later (we have some Thanksgiving things up too!) and I wanted to share the story of our gingerbread man ornaments with you.

One Christmas many years ago when I was very very young Lisa (my mom) lost her job. This was a huge blow to our family and Christmas was looking pretty bare that year. For our family Christmas is extremely important and we have a long list of traditions that we stick to every year, we also come up with at least one new tradition each year. One of the traditions that we have is to buy a few new ornaments for our tree, usually Dennis and Lisa buy each of us kids an ornament and then a few for the family. But this specific year we could not afford ornaments and Lisa was extremely upset about it so Dennis decided to make his own ornaments for us.

Eventually Dennis came up with the idea of these gingerbread men, and so he set out to make them. He drew, cut, and painted them by hand and tried to give each one a little character. I mean, check out the sleepy gingerbread man with the butt flap! He even cut out a few extras that Jessica and I could paint and make our very own.

The next year our family was back on our feet but we loved Dennis’ ornaments from the year before so much that he decided to try to make a few more for that year. The idea of doing birds came about because we live in the country and have a lot of little bird visitors in the winter. Dennis is a bird watcher and four of his favorites are the cardinal, blue bird, and blue jay so that is why we only have those four as ornaments (for now!). These are also completely handmade by Dennis and they also mean a lot to our family.

We wanted to share our family memories with everyone and that is why we have decided to add them to our shop. We tried to make them affordable because we know life is hard and we believe everyone should have a decorated tree for their holidays!

Stop by our page and check them out! Don’t forget to comment and let us know what you think!
