What We’re Doing About Etsy’s Changes

Some of you may have noticed that prices on our Etsy store have increased; this is because Etsy has increased the amounts that they charge us. In order to continue bringing our customers quality items we’ve had to raise prices. In addition to raising prices we’ve also had to limit certain product offerings through Etsy.
I did not want to do this & to be honest, I’m not happy about it. Some of you have been such loyal return customers for years now & you’ve come to depend on our consistent pricing so it was really hard to raise prices. We want to be able to offer you the best quality & variety of products at affordable prices.

So, what are you doing about it?

Well, we’ve looked into a few options and this is what I’ve come up with- we are going to offer 3 alternative ways to place your orders with us. By doing this we will be able to offer our regular prices, processing times, and free shipping services to our U.S. customers.

How can I place an order now?

Well, you can still place an order in our store on Etsy if you’d like. We still love using our Etsy storefront & are happy to be a part of the Etsy community so as of now we plan to never get rid of this option.

You can also follow us on Facebook, on Instagram, and on this website. We will post a larger variety of product offerings on these sites. Products offered will still continue to have our free shipping in the US guarantee & will be at our original price-points.
Additionally, these options allow us to broaden our custom orders & allow us to offer porch pickups when available.

How do I order through Facebook, Cherishedcottage.com, or Instagram?

On Facebook or Instagram you can either comment to let us know you’re interested in an item or you can message us about the item/to request a custom order. We’ll set it all up for you & send you an invoice to pay for your order.
On Cherishedcottage.com we are working on setting up a storefront. We will also be posting shoppable blog posts where you can checkout on our site directly.
I also want to add that if you follow us on Etsy & like an item there you can always email us to find out that non-Etsy pricing & receive an order invoice that way. Our email is: cherishedcottage98@gmail.com.

What about Lazy Dog Vintage?

Nothing is changing with Lazy Dog Vintage; we still have our booth space & still absolutely love our Lazy Dog family! We will still be continuing to stock our booth and continue to offer the same pricing there. If you see something in our booth at Lazy Dog please know you can talk to Ashley or Justin about placing a custom order through them & all items in the store can be purchased directly in the store.

Will you still offer sales & honor coupon codes?

Yes! We will always honor our return customer coupon code & we will continue posting sales & offering coupon codes.
*Please note: these sales/codes are only valid when purchasing from us directly. If you’ve come to use from Lazy Dog they offer their own awesome sales throughout the year that we participate in & you’ll definitely want to check out.

The Breakdown

We are still on Etsy & don’t plan on leaving Etsy.
We are now offering you the option to order from us directly through our blog, our Facebook page, and our Instagram page.
We are still going to do sales & coupon codes on our own sites.
We are still selling at Lazy Dog Vintage.
Overall nothing is going away, we’re just giving you more ways to order from us.

Indoor Scavenger Hunt for Kids

How are you & your family handling social distancing? I’m sure a lot of you, like our family, are trying to find ways to stay entertained or to keep the kiddos busy. I’ve been coming up with resources for our family & thought maybe it would be beneficial to share these resources with all of you.

I’m going to be posting at least once a day with some sort of activity/idea/etc of things to do with your little ones or things you can do yourself.

Some ideas that I have so far are: indoor scavenger hunt, free online field trips/tours of museums, state parks, and aquariums, game ideas, recipes, etc. If you have any requests/ideas please feel free to comment, message us, or email us with your ideas! We’d love to hear them!

Today I thought I’d share the indoor scavenger hunt I designed for the kids. There are two options, one is pre-filled in for you & the other I’ve designed to be fill in the blank so you can print a few copies & have unlimited scavenging opportunities! Both copies offer 20+ items to find around your home.

Both copies are free to download; just enjoy!
We’d love to see our scavenger hunts in action so if please feel free to tag us or hashtag us (#cherishedcottage) on social media so we can see!

Stay tuned tomorrow for two other scavenger hunts plus some additional ideas/activities to keep the kiddos busy at home.

Stay safe & healthy everyone!

A Cherished Cottage Update

Hello friends! If you follow us on Facebook then I’m sure you have an idea of what this post is about. With that in mind, some of this info will not be new to you but I’m hoping to share some of our latest updates through this post as well.

Our family has been going through quite a bit lately & I wanted to take the time to address is on here & share some more recent updates with you.

Some of our followers know our family personally & some of you don’t. But to us, you’re all a part of the Cherished Cottage family so we’d like to share some news with all of you.

Dennis is a HUGE and very important part of our family. He isn’t just the woodworker/painter in our business, he is also Lisa’s husband as well as Jessica & Alissa’s dad.

Dennis has had heart issues since he was a child; when he was in his early 30’s he had to get emergency open heart surgery which resulted in a valve replacement. At the time, Dennis & Lisa had just got married and he was a few months away from adopting Jessica & Alissa as his own daughters.

Fast forward to now- Dennis & Lisa have been married 22 years & together have adopted two more children who are now 13 and 10.
Since his heart surgery Dennis goes in to his Dr. for routine yearly heart exams. Part of the purpose of these exams has been to keep an eye on an aortic aneurysm that developed a few years ago.
All these years the aneurysm has stayed the same size & hasn’t been too much of a concern. However, the results of Dennis’ recent exam show that his aneurysm has grown exponentially.

One of the main concerns here is that when Dennis had his initial heart surgery it was to correct the aortic valve as well. His initial surgery was what is called the Ross Procedure; which is where they completely removed Dennis’ bad aortic valve, replaced it with his own pulmonary valve, and then replaced the pulmonary valve with a healthy one from a cadaver. This procedure saved Dennis’ life & we are so grateful to the Dr. who performed it.

On Friday (2/7) Dennis had his CT scan & we received the results later that day. It wasn’t the news we were hoping for & it’s led to more questions & concerns. The Dr’s initial diagnosis was in fact, correct.

This is were things have become a little confusing; when we received the initial diagnosis the cardiologist said that if he was correct Dennis would need another open heart surgery & he thought Dennis would be an excellent candidate for a TAVR (transcatheter aortic valve replacement) which is the most minimally invasive option. Basically they perform the surgery microscopically through the groin & would be the minimally invasive option. While awaiting for the CT scan appointment to arrive Lisa began looking around for a good heart surgeon. She’d been frequently recommended one in Philadelphia (which is about 2 hours from us) so she got in touch with him & he said that 1. he’d be more than willing to perform the surgery and 2. if the aneurysm was as bad as they assumed it to be Dennis would not be a good candidate for the TAVR procedure. Instead he’d need another open heart surgery.

We have an appointment with this surgeon in Philadelphia at the beginning of March. We have been trying to figure out all the details & find the best surgeon/options we can for Dennis. Our family has been very stressed & worried but we are trying very hard to stay positive.

Thank you to everyone who’s been with us for so long; we are so grateful for our Cherished Cottage family. We wanted to share this news with all of you since we consider you all so important & special to us. As of now this won’t cause an issue with our orders & other business aspects. But we do plan to keep you all updated and we ask that you keep us in your thoughts.

Hawk Olympics

As some of you are aware one of the members of our team/my older sister has Down syndrome. When Jessica was in school she attended our local Special Olympics and competed with/against other students with special needs within our own school district as well as the surrounding districts.

This event has always held a special place in not only Jessica’s heart but in our family’s. If there is a Special Olympics local to you, you really should make a point to attend. Even if it’s just for an hour. This event is so fun but also so humbling. There are children and young adults of all ages from different schools and districts competing in various events (such as track, softball throw, long jump, etc) for place ribbons. Even though these young people are competing they are incredibly supportive of one another. You will see students standing on the sidelines cheering on their peers and sometimes kids that they don’t even know. For me as a child I learned a lot by being on the bleachers and cheering my sister on. Watching these kids support each other taught me what being a good and supportive friend was and also taught me about kindness and humbleness.

I attended everyone of Jessica’s Special Olympics since I was very young all the way up to Jessica’s graduation. When Jessica graduated high school she was no longer able to attend the Special Olympics since it is designed for school age children. Numerous years have gone by that we have not been able to watch her participate; as the years have gone by for one reason or another there is no longer a local Special Olympics so our school district and some of the surrounding districts no longer are able to participate.

Within the last few years the Life Skills teacher at our local high school from the Special Olympics back with the “Hawk Olympics” (our mascot is a Hawk) which not only includes the children within the district who have special needs but also the children who are in learning support classes. This event is not just for our district though; she has taken is a step further and included other districts in the day. So essentially; it’s the Special Olympics by a different name.

My younger brother is in learning support classes so he is able to attend the Hawk Olympics as an athlete. This year was Hank’s second year attending and our second year cheering him and his peers on. As the Hawk Olympics approached this year Jessica expressed a desire to want to donate or do something for the students of our school district. We eventually landed on the idea of making the students water bottles. So Jessica and I sat down and worked on making a personalized water bottle for each Hawk student who would be attending. We are both so proud of how they turned out and so proud of our school’s students for all their hard work and team work that they displayed during the Hawk Olympics.

If you’re interested in learning more about the Special Olympics you can check out their website here.

Seeing the Beauty in Others

Hello All!

I just wanted to take a moment to share a story with you guys. Today’s Monday Motivation on our Instagram is:

and I felt that I should share a recent experience that I had.

Recently I took my mother and sister shopping, while at the store I was getting a little irritated with a woman who seemed to be really watching my mother (to the point of downright staring at times). Now, my mother has cerebral palsy and my sister has Down syndrome; I tend to be a little protective of the two of them so admittedly I was thinking pretty negatively about this woman.

When we left the store my sister and I were working on filling up the car with all the groceries we’d purchased when I noticed this same woman helping someone else (someone with a walker) load up their own groceries. As I stood there working on our cart I overheard her telling this woman that she noticed her and my mother in the store and she was watching the two of them to make sure they had the help they needed.

She explained that her brother has MS and just that morning had been rushed to the hospital, she said he wasn’t doing well and she was struggling with it. She went on to explain that she spends most of her time cooking and caring for him not because he can’t do things on his own but because she loves him so much and just wants him to never have to struggle more than he already does. When he was taken to the hospital she offered to come sit with him but he’d told her that with all the help she’s given him he knows she hasn’t had time to do what she needed to do. So instead of coming to sit with him he wanted her to “take the day off” and take care of herself.

So while doing her grocery shopping she saw my mother and this woman and wanted to be sure that they were both cared for; she noticed this woman was completely alone and felt she needed to do something to help. Eventually my mom walked over and these 3 women started talking and sharing stories. I felt pretty bad for immediately assuming the worst in this woman and made sure to thank her for her kindness and tell her that I felt she was an amazingly kind person.

I left there feeling humbled. So this quote reminds me of situations like that. I think we all have those moments where we assume the worst in someone and get angry or irritated right away. Another example I thought of that we all can probably relate to, is when someone pulls out in front of us while driving. They cut us off and we’re angry that they couldn’t wait “5 more seconds!” or that they “clearly weren’t paying attention!”. But sometimes I try to think to myself “maybe they couldn’t see”. Because where we live there are plenty of stop signs that are on an angled road and even if you’re stopped you have inch forward ever so slowly because it’s a complete blind spot.
So, let’s set a goal for this week to erase our negative thoughts and replace them with positive ones. It’s tough but it will make our week seem so much less stressful!

Handmade Christmas Ornaments in a Time of Need

Since November just began we have tried to get some Christmas things up on our shop. I know, I know, it isn’t December yet! But we wanted to get them up sooner rather than later (we have some Thanksgiving things up too!) and I wanted to share the story of our gingerbread man ornaments with you.

gingerbreadman, christmas, christmas ornament

One Christmas many years ago when I was very very young Lisa (my mom) lost her job. This was a huge blow to our family and Christmas was looking pretty bare that year. For our family Christmas is extremely important and we have a long list of traditions that we stick to every year, we also come up with at least one new tradition each year. One of the traditions that we have is to buy a few new ornaments for our tree, usually Dennis and Lisa buy each of us kids an ornament and then a few for the family. But this specific year we could not afford ornaments and Lisa was extremely upset about it so Dennis decided to make his own ornaments for us.

Eventually Dennis came up with the idea of these gingerbread men, and so he set out to make them. He drew, cut, and painted them by hand and tried to give each one a little character. I mean, check out the sleepy gingerbread man with the butt flap! He even cut out a few extras that Jessica and I could paint and make our very own.

The next year our family was back on our feet but we loved Dennis’ ornaments from the year before so much that he decided to try to make a few more for that year. The idea of doing birds came about because we live in the country and have a lot of little bird visitors in the winter. Dennis is a bird watcher and four of his favorites are the cardinal, blue bird, and blue jay so that is why we only have those four as ornaments (for now!). These are also completely handmade by Dennis and they also mean a lot to our family.

We wanted to share our family memories with everyone and that is why we have decided to add them to our shop. We tried to make them affordable because we know life is hard and we believe everyone should have a decorated tree for their holidays!

Stop by our page and check them out! Don’t forget to comment and let us know what you think!
